The German physicist Max Planck introduced the notion of packets of energy that he called "quanta" in order to explain why the wavelength (color) of the radiation given off by heated objects did not rise in a continuous manner but in discontinuous spurts from value to value as they grew hotter.

Dark energy is the mysterious force that many physicists think is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. In 2004, a couple of scientists claimed that the quantum fluctuations of empty space could be the source of dark energy and suggested a test for this idea.

There really are two kinds of mass. First, there is inertial mass, which describes how much an object resists being pushed around. Second, there is gravitational mass, which describes how strongly an object couples to the gravitational field. Yet, to the best precision we've been able to measure, these two kinds of mass are exactly the same.
